The Evolution of Rock: From Elvis to Indie
Rock music began as a fusion of rhythm and blues with country music in the American South. Elvis Presley brought it to mainstream consciousness in 1956. The Beatles and Rolling Stones transformed it into an art form in the 1960s. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath created heavy rock. Punk stripped it back to basics in 1977. New wave and post-punk added electronic elements. Grunge brought authenticity back in the early 1990s. Indie rock democratized production in the 2000s. Today rock exists in conversation with every other genre, from hip hop to electronic to classical, constantly reinventing itself while maintaining its core identity of guitar-driven energy and emotional directness.
